Abstract

This chapter discusses several applications of energy storage systems (ESS) in renewable energy microgrids. The configuration of ESS applied in microgrid is introduced at the beginning, including aggregated and distributed ESS. The energy management system includes load leveling and peak shifting features, which are widely used to mitigate load fluctuations and improve power quality. Next, the ESS that is used to suppress fluctuations in renewable sources is introduced, including constant power control, output filtering and ramp-rate control. Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) are another important application of ESS in microgrids, especially for the islanded renewable microgrid. The placement of ESS in a microgrid is important for power quality. The method that is used to determine the voltage regulation ability and power quality indices are introduced for the best placement of ESS. Using ESSs for voltage regulation and reactive power support is discussed, including a case study. Finally, a method using an ESS as an operating reserve is introduced.
