Abstract

Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa (Family: Rutaceae) is distributed in the Indian subcontinent areas up to 1200 m elevation in both the western and eastern Himalayas and cultivated throughout India. The fruit parts are extensively used medicinally in the Ayurvedic systems of medicines to cure many diseases. Bael contains rich sources of various phytoconstituents namely coumarins, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, carotenoids, and tannins that are reported to cure various diseases. Scientific reports showed that bael possesses various pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-diarrheal, antidiabetic, inhibits lipid peroxidation, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, and anti-ulcerative colitis effects etc. This chapter focuses mainly on the scientific progress on the fruits of A. marmelos related to nutritional and phytochemical composition, and pharmacological activities, with its potential in the nutraceutical market.
