Abstract

Electromagnetic compatibility is a term that covers the subjects of interference generation and the susceptibility of equipments to interference. The term includes radio interference, radar interference, sonar interference, telephone interference, computer interference, and general electronic interference. It takes account of the susceptibility of all equipment. Electromagnetic compatibility is the ability of all equipment—electrical, electronic, radio, and mechanical—to work together without fortuitous electrical coupling between them causing any malfunction. Failure to achieve a high degree of electromagnetic compatibility can result in degradation or failure of radio communication circuits, erratic behavior of automated electronic equipments, spurious echoes on radar or sonar displays. If equipment functions in the laboratory and does not give identical results when installed in a ship, a compatibility problem exists.
