Abstract

Adenoviruses are mainly associated with respiratory and ocular infections, with some human adenoviruses causing gastroenteritis in children. Adenoviruses also may prove problematic among immunosuppressed individuals. The double-stranded DNA genome is unique in being linear and thus requiring a protein primer for replications. A live, oral vaccine is in restricted use in the United States. Adenoviruses have been developed as vectors for heterologous viral antigens: candidate vaccines produced using adenovirus vectors have faced difficulties owing to pre-existing adenovirus immunity.
