Abstract

Spinal, epidural, and caudal blocks are collectively referred to as central neuraxial blocks. Significant technical, physiological, and pharmacological differences exist between the techniques although all result in one or a combination of sympathetic, sensory, and motor blockade. Central neuraxial blocks are widely utilized in surgery, obstetrics, acute postoperative pain management, and chronic pain relief. This chapter outlines the relevant anatomy, mechanism of action, physiological effects, pharmacology, and the indications, contraindications and complications of spinal, epidural, and caudal blocks in turn.
