Abstract

The perioperative period presents challenges in identifying patients who are hypo- or hypercoagulable, so understanding the coagulation system is critically important for the practicing anesthesia provider. There are also multiple medications that are used in the perioperative period to manipulate the coagulation system that can affect the anesthetic plan. This chapter will review several common hemostasis topics that will affect perioperative management including normal coagulation, hereditary and acquired coagulation diseases, laboratory evaluation of the coagulation system, and antithrombotic and procoagulant drugs.
