Abstract

Transformers are essential components in the power system, and their failure can create massive disruptions in the distribution of power supply. Due to the high failure rate of transformers, finding ways to improve their reliability, material quality, design, and efficiency deserves extensive research. Energy efficient Transformer Design (TD), which reduces transformer losses, is one of the most important steps toward reducing the transformer failure rate. This chapter investigates a way to develop energy efficient transformer design, by performing TD Optimization (TDO), rather than simply dimensioning with thumb rule.
