Abstract
Oxygen tension is a crucial factor in new vessel growth, with regions of hypoxia that induce the expression of angiogenic molecules such as VEGF-A, and hypoxia stimulates vasculogenesis (Hoper and Jahn, 1995). Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a transcription factor that is selectively stabilized and activated under hypoxic conditions and that coordinates the adaptive response of tissues to hypoxia (Semenza, 1999). Hypoxia and the subsequent alteration of HIF-1α, can induce VEGF-A and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1), which stimulate migration of endothelial precursors during vasculogenesis (Ramirez-Bergeron et al., 2006).
