Abstract

Research with human subjects requires appropriate planning and care. Well-thought out studies pay careful attention to the determination of which classes of participants might be enrolled, how many of each group are needed, and how those participants might be identified. Once enrolled, participants must be treated with respect for their well-being, privacy, and related concerns. In most cases, research protocols for studies involving human participants should be reviewed by institutional review boards or related committees responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of study participants. Participants should provide informed consent whenever possible. Special cases such as deceptive studies, longitudinal studies, and research with children or other groups with special concerns provide additional challenges.
