Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) and diversion colitis (DC) are inflammatory-related conditions that can occur as a consequence of preexisting long-term and/or severe inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). On the other side, obesity is a chronic low-grade inflammatory state that is said to increase the risk for IBD, considering the translocation of bacteria and immunological mediators from the adipose tissue to the gut. Given the increasing interest in handling such comorbidities or complications coming from IBD, in the last years research has been performed in order to understand not only the physiopathology behind it but also the potential benefits of alternative natural plant products. The use of berry fruits, cereals, medicinal herbs, and vegetable oils has been suggested, especially via animal models, for colitis-associated cancer, colostomy leading to DC, and high-fat diet-linked obesity followed by colitis. Considering this, this chapter aims to discuss the association of IBD with CRC, DC, and obesity, and mostly, the effects of natural plant products on such conditions.
