Abstract

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect the gastrointestinal tract and involve other organs of the body. This involvement is termed extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) of IBD. Musculoskeletal, ophthalmic, dermatological, and hepatobiliary disorders are the most frequent. These disorders have in common with IBD the dysregulation of the immune response and can impact patients' quality of life. There is a great interest in seeking nondrug therapies for IBD. In this context, natural plant products with beneficial effects on IBD could act similarly in their EIMs. This chapter intends to present and discuss natural products, especially dietary polyphenols, with antiinflammatory effects in EIMs of IBD, including molecular mechanisms of action. Data was acquired from clinical trials, animal models, and in vitro studies. Some natural plant products could act positively as regulators and/or modulators of inflammatory pathways involved in the inflammatory response of those conditions.
