Abstract

With the inception of practical utilization of ion beam, researcher's fraternity was so excited to apply it in numerous applications for modification and development of many technologies that we see today. The fine control over beam's energy, intensity, trajectory and charge states of ion make it a unique and versatile tool for study, investigation, modification, development and application for the betterment of humankind. Most frequent use of the ion beams, which directly benefited to humans, is the radiation therapy (RT) for the treatment of cancer. In RT, the dose of radiation prescribed by the physician not only depends on the patient, type of cancer and tissue but also on the type of ion, its energy, fluence, spot size, spread of Bragg peak (SOBP), and various parameters of ion beam. In such case, the precise measurement of the absorbed dose with the maximum tolerance of 5% is recommended by an international standards (ICRU). Therefore, the measurement of the dose delivered by the ion beam is crucial aspect. Thus, this chapter aims to throw light on the development of radiation sources in RT and the recent advancement in thermoluminescence materials to achieve the efficient measurement of radiation dose.
