Abstract

Since ancient times, medicinal plants are being used for the treatment of human infections. Traditional system of medicine in different countries specified anti-microbial use of several medicinal plants. There is a constant quest for exploration and development of newer antimicrobial agents from botanicals. Different assay methods have been developed to screen antimicrobials from medicinal plants and other natural resources. Keeping in mind the emerging trend of searching alternative antimicrobials, this chapter has been designed to highlight several screening and evaluation techniques for antimicrobial susceptibility testing, including antimycobacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antimolluscicidal, antipiscicidal, antigiardial, and antiamoebicidal activity of botanicals and their lead phytoconstituents.
