Abstract

The enteroviruses are simple, naked viruses capable of causing severe neurological, respiratory, and systemic illnesses in immune-susceptible patients. Since the global eradication of the polioviruses, infections caused by other members of the enterovirus genus have risen rapidly in the past decade, causing high mortality and morbidity in infants and young children. In many countries, the numbered enteroviruses, such as EV-A71, EV-D68, and CV-A16 are treated as high threat pathogens due to their high rate of reemergence that result in periodically occurring outbreaks. In this chapter, we discuss various strategies for the treatment and prophylaxis of enteroviral infections caused by the numbered enteroviruses. The book chapter places emphasis on recent progress in vaccine development and the potential of novel antienteroviral compounds, particularly multivalent vaccines, and broad-spectrum therapeutics.
