Abstract

Fast and sensitive determination of biomarkers and biologically active compounds is very important in biomedical diagnostics, food and beverage industry, and environmental analysis. Some promising directions in analytical and bioanalytical application of conducting polymers (CPs) are discussed. Recently polypyrrole, polyaniline, polythiophene, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) are mostly applied for biosensor design. We are overviewing some the most attractive polymerization methods, which can be used for the design of CPs-based structures. The applicability of various polypyrrole-based layers in biosensor design is presented. The most suitable analytical signal determination methods, which are used in CPs-based biosensors, are presented. Biocompatibility of some CPs is addressed and predictions toward the application of conducting polymer-based layers in implantable biosensors are discussed. Recent tendencies and future prospects in the development of sensors based on CPs and their composites with other materials are highlighted. Hence, advances in biomedical diagnostics reveal that the creation of various biosensors is multidisciplinary task.
