Abstract

This chapter begins with a definition of network management and then looks at the different functions that it includes, such as record keeping and administration, performance monitoring, capacity planning/network expansion, troubleshooting and problem isolation, and security monitoring. The most important issue to recognize about network management is that it is not a separate entity that can be added on to an existing network; network management systems are an integral part of the network. In preparing a network design, the network engineer should not look only at the physical elements involved in getting a bit from Point A to Point B; he or she must also focus on building an infrastructure for providing services. This chapter briefly explains network management that includes all of the systems required to provide reliable and cost effective service on an ongoing basis. Network management is not one responsibility but a whole series of tasks that are required to ensure the ongoing operation of a network. Network management tasks are typically divided into a number of areas, though the use of wireless technology does introduce new responsibilities.
