Abstract

With industrialization and globalization there has been an increase in demand for nonvegetarian food items. In response to this the food processing industry has responded well by flooding the retail market with variety of animal food products. These food items if unsafe can be source of various food borne illnesses. For the safety of animal food items, it is imperative that good animal husbandry (GAH) or good veterinary practices (GVP) be practiced to assure consumers that foods derived from animals meet acceptable levels of quality and safety. Along with this safe animal feed, that is, free from any threats should be provided to all animals. Improved nutritional content of livestock feed may lead to direct health benefit for animals, improving their welfare, and also indirectly benefit consumers. Animal welfare and health also plays a vital role in the overall quality of food.
