Abstract

This chapter describes the document types used in the Tools & Materials (T&M) approach. Document types, especially the application-oriented ones, are an essential element of the approach, and they are the material basis of the author–critic cycles. Application-oriented development documents—that is, documents particularly suitable for cooperative work with users—include scenarios, concept models, glossaries, system visions, prototypes, cooperation pictures, and purpose tables. All document types and particularly diagram types that developers use for the technical and construction aspects of software development are considered technical document types. Technical documents are designated for software developers and should be comprehensible and easy to use for this target group. The quasi-standardization of unified modeling language (UML) combines the key document types and notations for technical design. However, documentation should be minimized to the extent needed for communication between developers and customers. As an important technique for the interaction with users and domain experts, qualitative interviews are described in the chapter. Technical UML diagrams and models are also discussed in detail.
