Abstract

Seed potato is a key factor for the quality and productivity of potato crop and it is the first link in the whole potato value chain. Healthy and vigorous seed potatoes are of utmost importance for the health, vigor, and yield of resulting potato crops. So, producing high-quality seed potatoes has always been an important issue in potato-growing areas and was gradually improved thanks to improved processes and new technologies. This chapter presents the history and objectives of seed potato multiplication and certification schemes, the expected qualities for certified seed potatoes, the diversity of seed supply systems from informal to advanced technologies such as tissue culture for fast multiplication, the process and regulations for testing and certification, and for the seed crop management. Finally, some data are presented on production and trading of seed potatoes, before presenting prospects and new challenges for the seed sector, in a context of global change and expectation for sustainable crop management.
