Abstract
Benefits and applications for alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), polyhydroxy acids (PHAs), and bionic acids in cosmetic and therapeutic skin care are numerous and diverse owing to their many effects on skin physiology and function across the SC, epidermis, and dermis. AHAs including glycolic acid are clinically tested and shown in skin care and as topical peels to deliver the healthy, smooth, even-complected qualities of youthful, clear skin. PHAs are gaining in popularity in the marketplace as they combine the well-studied benefits of AHAs with the added benefits of being gentle, moisturizing, barrier-building, and antiglycation antioxidants/chelators. AHAs, PHAs, and bionic acids can be used alone to achieve significant antiaging effects or with various topical medications and cosmetic procedures to smooth, condition, and improve photoaged skin.
