Abstract

This review details the various aspects of the coagulation system as it matures with age systematically, including the coagulation proteins, fibrinolytic and thrombotic pathways. Systematic approach to a bleeding diathesis in pediatrics is discussed with the help of flow sheets and tables. Bleeding disorders and their management in children are discussed, including new emerging therapies like monoclonal antibodies and gene therapy. The section on thrombosis discusses both congenital and acquired thrombophilia risk factors. This is followed by thrombosis management in specific scenarios, which incorporates the latest guidelines from American Society of Hematology (ASH), American Heart Association (AHA) and American college of Chest physician journal (CHEST). The therapeutics section discusses the pharmacology of various anticoagulants and thrombolytics. Special focus is placed on direct oral anticoagulants as data emerge for use in pediatrics. The latest studies in pediatric bleeding and thrombosis are incorporated whenever possible throughout the chapter to bring out the latest updates in the field.
