Abstract
It is important to distinguish peripheral disorders related to the inner ear, from central disorders related to the brainstem or brain. Both acute vestibular neuronitis and stroke in the medulla cause vertigo, difficulty with balance, and ataxia. In order to distinguish the central causes of auditory and vestibular symptoms from peripheral causes, this chapter explains relevant clinical illnesses that are due to peripheral auditory and vestibular system disorders in detail, as they are very common in real practice.
