Abstract
The chapter looks at the global picture of onshore shale gas activity and describes the current status in terms of commercial or exploratory production of shale gas. Regional summaries of relevant geological and environmental information as well as legislative and sociopolitical considerations are included. Very few countries have established commercial production of shale gas outside North America: Argentina, China, and Australia are growing examples where this is possible.
