Abstract

This chapter discusses possible coastal reservoirs in South/Northern America. The water-richest continent also has a serious water-shortage problem. Its Colorado river has no water to the sea frequently. The water crisis becomes severe along the Pacific coast from Canada, USA till Chile due to low annual rainfall. Dams are not a suitable mode to develop the water resources because of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is better to dismantle all dams in the earthquake prone regions and to be replaced by coastal reservoirs. It is highlighted that coastal reservoirs, if designed well, can be used to protect cities like New York and New Orleans against hurricanes. Water pollution in the Great Lakes can be well solved using the SPP strategy.
