Abstract

This chapter mainly discusses how to solve water problems in inland areas and China is selected as an example. For water diversion, it is suggested that interbasin water diversion should consider coastal reservoirs’ interconnectvity to minimize its impacts on environment and human. The South-North water diversion (SNWD) project in China is discussed as the case study for comparison. Large dams’ impact on the environment is demonstrated by Three Gorges dam in the Yangze basin, where giant lakes like Dongting and Poyang lakes are dry. The countermeasure is the SPP strategy which can store floodwater in the lake for flood defence and water resources development. The SPP strategy can be also used to solve social/environmental problems like virus spreading or pandemic control, sponge city design, lake water quality improvement, etc. Huai River is used as an example to demonstrate the importance of coastal reservoirs and SPP strategy.
