Abstract

This chapter presents Wizard of Oz (WOz) as a method and then focuses on its use with children. It introduces WOz methods with a short historical overview augmented with references from early studies that used the method. The literature on the use of WOz with children before concluding with a taxonomy that describes the variability of WOz studies is presented in the chapter with the process of carrying out a WOz study with children. WOz studies give evaluators the chance to test situations and technologies that might otherwise not be tested. The study requires careful planning. With children, for the safest use of WOz studies, deception should be minimized or eliminated altogether.
