Abstract

This chapter summarizes developments in solar hybridization with conventional fossil plants. Drawing on examples of both experimental and commercial plants, the potential of hybrid solar/thermal power systems is reviewed, the arrangements and methods of hybrid solar/fossil fuel processes are outlined. These include fossil fuel backup/boosting of solar thermal plants, solar-aided coal-fired power plants, and integrated solar combined cycle plants. In addition, several new hybridization systems are introduced. Finally, future challenges for technological improvements for hybridization are outlined.
