Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter describes differing modes of reproduction and some comparisons with other vertebrates. The bony fishes, class Osteichthyes, are divided into the actinopterygian or ray finned fishes and the sarcopterygian or lobe-finned fishes. The two living groups of sarcopterygian fishes could not be more different in their modes of reproduction. Coelacanth reproduction is more like that of advanced elasmobranches and lungfish reproduction like that of living amphibians. All of the living sarcopterygian fishes are found in the warmer latitudes of the southern hemisphere. The two known living species of coelacanths inhabit the deep oceans (90–200 m deep) off the east coast of Africa and the islands of Indonesia.
