Abstract

This chapter describes shell-and-tube heat exchangers using the nomenclature from the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA). TEMA Class R, C, and B exchanger characteristics are compared. Selection guides give advice for shell-and-tube, plate-and-frame, and spiral exchanger types, with design recommendations. A procedure for thermal design and pressure drop estimation is presented. Equations are provided, and they are implemented in the companion Excel spreadsheet. Correlations for the log-mean temperature difference (LMTD) correction factor are given which are useful for computerized solutions since most texts only provide graphical factors. Typical heat transfer coefficients are tabulated. Fouling factors and installation recommendations are discussed. Vacuum condensers and air-cooled heat exchanger designs are discussed, with equations for thermal design of air-cooled units.
