Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the school system in China. The chapter discusses recruitment, curriculum, thought education, and the sociocultural implications of the system. Even though the concept of school mental health is a new field for child psychiatry in China, there is no doubt of the great role child psychiatry will play in promoting the mental health of school children in addition to providing psychiatric care for mentally ill children. Child psychiatrists will provide consultation, education, and research for special mental health problems, such as the hyperactive syndrome. The living environment and educational level of the residents varies in different parts of the city of Shanghai. The preliminary data indicate that the prevalence rate of hyperactive syndrome is higher in the area where the living conditions and educational level of the residents are lower, showing that the syndrome is related to the economic and educational background of the family. However, it is speculated that the dysfunction has no direct relation to the educational system itself.
