Abstract

This chapter provides a very basic overview of the principles and technologies associated with water purification, or more specifically, sterilization. There are two general classes of sterilization technologies: those based on chemical methods and those based on non-chemical technologies. The major application of these technologies is in the purification of water for human consumption. The chapter also discusses various waterborne diseases and the available water treatment options. It elaborates on biology of aquatic systems and water quality test methods. The chapter discusses principles of ozone effluent treatment and also elaborates on the properties of ozone. It also discusses the applications of water sterilization technologies.
