Abstract

There is increasing evidence that abnormalities of epigenetic mechanisms of gene expression contribute to the pathogenesis of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. One of the abnormal epigenetic mechanisms of gene expression implicated is abnormalities of histone modifications. Among abnormal histone modifications, a common finding in patients with psychotic disorders is increased activity of histone deacetylases (HDACs) and decreased histone acetylation. These data suggest that histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) could be useful in the treatment of patients with such disorders.
