Abstract

This chapter discusses the seismic processing and seismic applications. Seismic processing has always tended to use the most powerful computers, and over time, seismologists have used computers to create ever-improving views of the underground. Companies in the petroleum industry use high performance computing in different ways in their search for oil deposits. Geophysicists at oil companies are constantly trying to peer underground, looking for undiscovered oil deposits. The chapter discusses the two ways that high performance computers are being used in the oil industry. One way is using supercomputers for the analysis of underground geologic structures. Another way is to model oil reservoirs to determine ways to extract oil from an oil field. The oil industry has always been a good customer of high performance hardware. As computational power becomes greater and the technology for analyzing seismic data advances, the ability to see finer views of the underground structures will improve.
