Abstract
This chapter discusses how to find the second moment of area, that is, moment of inertia by using Simpson's rule. The second moment of an element of an area about an axis is equal to the product of the area and the square of its distance from the axis. The chapter calculates second moment of a rectangle about an axis parallel to one of its sides and passing through the centroid, and second moment of the water-plane area about a transverse axis through the centre of flotation. The chapter describes the procedure to find second moments of area using Simpson's rule. First, a sketch from the given information is made, a moment table and insert values are used, and then the area is calculated using summations obtained in the table.
