Abstract

This chapter presents five in-depth case studies of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) that generate as much energy as they consume over the course of a year. The case studies represent different project types, sizes, and climate zones from large office buildings, a municipality building, an industrial building, a school, to multifamily autonomous housing. Each case study describes the project goals and design principles, the performance characteristics, and lessons learned. Based on measurement and verification and postoccupancy evaluations, we present results that include technical insights, hands-on experience, and valuable evidence on NZEB operation. This chapter presents comparable information regarding the performance, cost, and occupant behavior to avoid when designing and operating a NZEB. The case studies form the foundation for the other chapters in this book by providing unique insights into common best practices and mitigation strategies that are critical for any owner or designer looking to achieve the net zero energy target in operation.
