Abstract

Ivanhoe Mines conducts intensive drilling exploration program during the year 2000. With the local Oyu Tolgoi team expertise retained, Ivanhoe Mines managed to quickly progress its introduction to the project. BHP continued holding the Oyu Tolgoi license. At the request of Ivanhoe Mines, the Oyu Tolgoi license was reduced and converted into four separate smaller license areas. Drill testing continued with shallow drilling to trace the extensions of the chalcocite blanket. The secondary mineralization resource was expanded. Ivanhoe goes through its own critical moments at Oyu Tolgoi. In 2001, project management decided to refocus the drilling on hypogene mineralization by drilling deeper. Three drill holes at South, South West, and Central Oyu returned encouraging results.
