Abstract

Fire, power failures, bio-hazardous, and hazardous chemical spills and various medical emergencies which might result in property damage, personal injury, or environmental disruption must be dealt appropriately as per predefined procedures and protocols. Emergency response equipment must be operational, and the laboratory personnel should be trained to handle any potential accidents. If one can handle the emergency, then he or she should do so, but first pull the fire alarm. After pulling the fire alarm, get out of the building, and call for help. There are mainly three kinds of emergencies in a chemical laboratory, i.e. chemical emergency, medical emergency, and fire emergency. The chemical emergency normally results from the rupture of containers, spill of chemicals, or failure of control equipment that results in an uncontrolled release of a hazardous chemical into the workplace. Laboratory (i.e. academia and industries) safety manual should consist of emergency procedures which are related to the specific hazards which are susceptible to occur in the lab. Every laboratory (i.e. academia and industries) personnel should review and understand them.
