Abstract

To feed the increasing world population there is a great need to improve crop productivity, which resulted in excessive chemical use and environmental and health concern. In this regard integration of advanced technology is required by minimizing the input of pesticide and fertilizer per unit while improving crop productivity. With some inimitable properties like antimicrobial and plant growth-promoting activities, chitosan is increasingly gaining major research interest in the agricultural field. Chitosan nanoparticles represent themselves as an efficient encapsulating agent due to their natural affinity toward metals. Metal encapsulating chitosan nanoparticles are highly applicable in addressing key agricultural issues like micronutrient deficiency and excessive chemical use. Efficient nutrient utilization and a healthy plant system are the sole criteria for improved defense status and crop productivity. Herein we have summarized the various chitosan-based nanomaterials that have been successfully utilized for the nutrient supply in plants.
