Abstract

The research and development of self-sensing concrete has produced a revolution in the field of concrete, in the context of research in all types of smart concretes, which is briefly summarized in this chapter. Self-sensing concrete can in situ monitor such parameters as strain (or deformation), stress (or force), crack, damage, temperature, and humidity, which reflect its conditions. Although the intrinsic self-sensing concrete has been developed for more than 20years, many efforts are still needed to promote its development. Some challenges in fabrication, measurement of sensing signal, sensing property and mechanism, function expansion, and application of the self-sensing concrete need to be addressed in the future.
