Abstract

Specific biologic studies are recently started by the Central Institute for Marine Research (ICRAM). Various diving inspections and two video films are carried out in these studies. Observations show that a rock barrier has lost its porosity, and is mostly filled with sand and well naturalized with the seabed, resembling a natural reef with an active marine life. However, the existing fine sand beach did not experience hard bottom structures before. The water quality at Ostia Beach is improved in the last years and the general attitude towards the rock barrier is positive. Case studies for DELOS are selected to represent different coastal systems across European countries, and a case study for macrotidal shores is also presented in the chapter. Technically, the location of the scheme in the intertidal zone also allowed easy access to the structures, as they are completely uncovered at low tide. Accessing the structures on foot, therefore, could carry out ecological investigations and experimental studies.
