Abstract

The application of cognitive and educational theories holds great value for enhancing the quality of educational media. This chapter discusses ways in which both broad theories of development and more specific theories regarding children's processing of media have been applied to the design of educational television series and digital games. When researchers draw upon well-supported theories to derive recommendations for design that are specific, concrete, practical, and actionable, collaboration between producers and researchers can yield media products that are educationally powerful and well suited to the needs and abilities of the target audience.
