Abstract

The nature of emotion is considered as an epigenetic phenomenon containing a structure with a deep substrate. This epigenetic formulation proposes a system of dispositional elements that exists at birth and is contained within the program of emotion. A network of the relationships of this emotion program is presented along with a discussion of the interaction between the epigenetic framework and object relations experience. The dispositional network of elements within emotion that is considered includes traits, defenses, intrapsychic components, and diagnostic and cognitive properties. It is proposed that the elements of this network appear in discrete form during various stages of infancy. The theoretical analysis of the structure of this network of dispositions is considered in a psycho-sexual developmental context and within a psychoanalytic framework. A first approximation linking basic emotions with corresponding cognitive orientations is also presented.
