Abstract

One of ISA Server 2004's biggest competitive advantages is that it is not only a firewall and virtual private network (VPN) server and gateway but also a Web-caching server. The Web-caching component allows speeding up Web access for corporate network users and potentially reducing the overall bandwidth usage on all Internet links. The chapter explains the concepts and step-by-step procedures required to configure the ISA Server 2004 firewall as a Web-caching server. The chapter describes the settings required to optimize Web-caching performance, and explains how to configure Web proxy chaining to improve Web performance for branch office users and reduce the overall bandwidth usage on branch office links to the Main office. ISA Server 2004 can act as a combined firewall and Web-caching server or as a dedicated Web-catching server, in addition to its default configuration. The concepts of Web caching and an explanation on how to configure an ISA Server 2004 computer to perform caching for an organization are also provided in the chapter.
