Abstract

Primarily, lignin is considered as one of the most abundant renewable resources on the earth. By composition, lignin is enriched with an aromatic structure and shows every potential for the utilization as renewable precursors of value-added products. Notably, large quantities of lignin are underutilized, manifesting wastage of such valuable resources. Moreover, less than 2% of an annual valorization rate of biomass-derived lignin suggests the necessity for a technological advancement to capitalize lignin as an important feedstock. In this chapter, the latest technological advancements in lignin synthesis and conversion into value-added products are detailed. Two different routes of delignification and depolymerization are separately discussed for the synthesis of lignin derived from biomass. For lignin valorization, the involvement of several microbial pathways is highlighted in order to exhibit the true potential of lignin-degrading microbes towards value-added products.
