Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of a few general guides and bibliographies on visual arts. An intelligent, unannotated, general selection of books on the fine arts is provided in E.L. Lucas, Art Books: A Basic Bibliography on the Fine Arts (Greenwich, New York Graphic Society, 1968), a revision of her earlier Harvard List of Books on Art, published in 1952. A wide-ranging but rather more mechanical selection of books is M. W. Chamberlin, Guide to Art Reference Books (Chicago, American Library Association, 1959). This is the most extensive survey of reference works on the visual arts. Entries are annotated. A useful popular narrative guide to the visual arts is N. Carrick, How to Find Out About the Arts (Oxford, Pergamon Pr., 1965). The Universal Catalogue of Books on Art was published in two volumes in 1870 (Chapman & Hall) with a supplement in 1877 (HMSO). The three volumes were reprinted (New York, Burt Franklin, 1964). The Catalogue aims to list books on art contained in the National Art Library in the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum, with all other books published to the date of issue of the catalogue.
