Abstract
Polyester hydrogels are being used in various applications. Synthesis of sustainable polyester hydrogels can be achieved either using biodegradable polymer units such as biodegradable polyesters, polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA), poly-2-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) or by adopting sustainable pathways of synthesis like gamma radiation, UV-visible irradiation or freeze-thawing method. Enhanced properties of polyester hydrogels can be attained by copolymerization with other synthetic or natural materials. Polyester hydrogels are used in biomedical, tissue engineering, textile, and food industry. This chapter reviews some fundamental characteristics and emerging applications of polyester hydrogels in light of the latest publications in this area.
