Abstract
This chapter introduces the history, definition, developments, characteristics, evaluation, and implementation of safety culture logically. It starts with the origin of the term ‘safety culture’, together with its various definitions commonly used. It also covers its comparison with another term, ‘safety climate’. Then this chapter demonstrates the developments in safety culture by introducing three models: HSE safety culture model, Shell’s heart and mind safety culture model, and DuPont’s safety culture model. Characteristics of good safety culture are also mentioned in this chapter. Based on these characteristics, this chapter introduces several ways to evaluate and implement safety culture.
