Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of fire and fire protection. The combustion process and the classification of fires are introduced. The flammability of gas/vapors and aerosols including flammability limits, aerosol combustion, ignition temperature, ignition time delay, ignition energy, and burning velocity are discussed. Topics of the ignition process such as ignition sources and probability of ignition are presented. Different types of fires in a process plant are classified and analyzed. The modeling of fire damage and injury from fire is presented. Fire prevention and protection measures which include passive and active fire protection, fire detection and alarm, and firefighting agents are also introduced. Finally, examples of fire protection applications such as firefighting in a process plant, fire protection in buildings, and fire protection in transport are provided.
