Abstract
The EU Directive on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes (Directive 86/609/EEC replaced by Directive 2010/63/EU) is a forerunner in implementing the Three Rs (Replace, Reduce, and Refine) principle, and has, as final goal, the full replacement of procedures on live animals for scientific and educational purposes as soon as it is scientifically possible to do so.
