Abstract
Classical momentum theory is applied to the ideal propeller, called an actuator disc, to predict thrust and power performance. A more detailed analysis using blade element theory is used to determine the detailed characteristics of the propeller. The thrust, torque, and power coefficients, the advance ratio, and the blade activity factor are introduced to facilitate use of standard propeller performance charts and the associated empirical methods for performance estimation and propeller selection are discussed. The concept of a variable speed propeller is introduced and the basic method of propeller selection is also introduced. Ducted propellers are described and the performance enhancement they provide is discussed. The turboprop, a combination of the propeller and the gas turbine engine, is analyzed and discussed. Geared turbofan and open rotor engines which possess very high bypass ratios and lie somewhere between conventional turbofans and turboprops are considered.
